Right up front, I do not support defunding our law enforcement agencies. I know the importance of our police and support their efforts to improve relationships with our communities.  Locally a large percentage of crime has an addiction or mental health component.  Incarceration is both costly and ineffective in addressing the core issues.  I am proud that Houghton County established a Drug Court to direct people to treatment for their addictions reducing the burden on our jail system.  Our law enforcement is stretched thin, and our officers are asked to do too many jobs.  We need better support for mental health and social services, promote a dialogue between local law enforcement and all citizens, and create an intentional model for community policing.  As a State Legislator, I would acknowledge that problems still exist in some larger police forces, and improvements are needed.
